How to Safely Have a Fireworks Display at Home (Without Any Drama)
A home fireworks display is one of the best ways to celebrate, whether it’s Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve or a birthday. Here’s the part most people miss: the best displays aren’t the loudest, they’re the best planned. With 20+ years of firework experience, here’s our no-nonsense guide to putting on a show everyone remembers for the right reasons.
1. Pick the Right Space
Your location matters more than your fireworks. Look for a large, open, flat area, well away from:
- Houses, sheds, fences and garages
- Trees, hedges and overhead cables
- Parked cars
- Spectators (check the safe viewing distance printed on each firework)
Short on space? Choose smaller fireworks like fountains, Roman candles and compact barrages, or a bundle designed for smaller gardens. Bigger isn’t always better.
2. Plan Before You Light
The safest displays are the ones planned ahead of time:
- Read the instructions on every firework in daylight, not by torchlight when it’s already dark
- Check the weather. High winds are a deal-breaker, and rain can make fireworks unreliable
- Set out a running order, starting small and building to a big finale
- Tell your neighbours. It’s polite, and it gives pet owners time to prepare
Big one here! Check the rules. In the UK, fireworks can’t be set off between 11pm and 7am, with exceptions for Bonfire Night (until midnight), New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (until 1am)
3. Create Your Safety Kit
Have these within arm’s reach before the first firework goes off:
- A bucket of water for used fireworks, and another for emergencies
- A hose or fire extinguisher nearby
- Safety glasses and gloves for whoever is lighting
- A torch (never use a naked flame to see what you’re doing)
- A first aid kit
4. Appoint One Responsible Adult
Choose one sober person to be in charge of the display. Everyone else stays back, behind a clear boundary line. Alcohol and fireworks don’t mix, so save the celebrating drinks for afterwards.
5. Light Fireworks the Right Way
- Always follow the instructions for each firework
- Always fire rockets from their provided firing tube ensuring the wooden stick can fly freely
- Fix barrages securely so they can’t tip over, using a stable base or firmly packed sand or soil
- Light at arm’s length and retreat immediately
- Never go back to a lit firework, even if it hasn’t gone off. A “dud” can still go off at any moment
- Never hold lit fireworks in your hand (unless designed to be, like sparklers)
- Keep spare fireworks in a closed box, away from where you’re lighting
6. Clear Up Safely
Once the show is over, leave used fireworks for at least 20 to 30 minutes, then soak them in a bucket of water overnight before putting them in the bin. Any firework that didn’t go off should also go in the water, and never be relit.
Sparkler Safety: The Tips Everyone Needs to Know
Sparklers feel harmless, but they burn at around 1,000°C, hot enough to melt some metals. They cause more accidental injuries than almost any other firework, so they deserve proper respect.
- Never give sparklers to children under 5
- Always supervise children, and make sure they’re holding them correctly
- Wear gloves. The wire stays dangerously hot long after the sparkler goes out
- Light one at a time and hold it at arm’s length
- Keep a bucket of water nearby. When it’s finished, put the hot end straight into the water
- Never wave them near faces, clothing or other people, and never run with one
- Don’t hold a baby while holding a sparkler
- Wear sensible clothing. Avoid loose sleeves, scarves and flammable fabrics
Super Sparkler Tip! - Poke your sparkler handle into a reasonably sized carrot to extend the handle and allow for better grip.
Quick Tips for Pet and Noise-Friendly Displays
Worried about pets, young children or noise-sensitive neighbours? Low-noise fireworks give you all the colour and spectacle with far less bang, and are a great way to enjoy a display without the stress.
